I lived in High Hall as a first year student in 1989-1990 and remember some fun times there and making friendships that have lasted to this day. End of term discos, dinner nights and I think Evan Dando's The Lemonheads played there in my time too. Think also that Ian Curtis and Joy Division played their last gig there in the early 1980s. There was a small bar that overlooked the refectory and a nice place to hang out in the evening. The rooms were simply furnished with a single bed, desk, chair and wardrobe plus a sink for washing. My friends would knock for me at my room on the second floor in the evenings for dinner in the refectory, also the venue for Sunday lunch. High Hall was furthest from the university campus, but closer to the centre of Birmingham and the nightclub scene. Great views over the Vale and its lake which was very nice in summer. Happy Times!
