Two years on from when i noted the German Market was expected to attract 2 million visitors in 2008, Festive German's are back, the Birmingham Post has reported that 3.1 million visitors browsed the 10th Frankfurt German market in Birmingham;

Despite the wintry weather and the economic downturn the market attracted more visitors than 2009 with the Christmas market the largest German market outside of Germany and Austria. Since it began in 2001 it has doubled in size, generating millions of pounds for the city centre economy and attracting visitors to the city and the Bullring shopping centre which opened extended hours during the run up to Christmas.

Stallholders continued with their annual tradition of giving leftover perishable goods to local charities.

Nadine Loewenthal, spokeswoman for the traders, said: “The Frankfurt stallholders are always delighted by the support shown by customers from Birmingham and beyond. This is a city that knows how to celebrate Christmas.

“The handover of our leftover produce gives something back to a city that never fails to make us feel so welcome.”
