New Street Christmas Present

Since my previous post, Station work(s), on redevelopment work on New Street Station, progress has continued. Platform 1 has now reopened and steelwork is being prepared for the extension of the Navigation Street bridge and new entrance on Hill Street. The lifting of the new sections will involve a 700 tonne crane with work taking place while the station is closed for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The new bridge wont fully open until Autumn 2012.

Work on the new steelwork.

Construction workers will start work on extending the footbridge in Navigation Street at midnight on Christmas Eve and will work around the clock until late on Boxing Day to complete the work at the west end of the station. It will allow access to platforms 10, 11 and, for the first time, platform 12. It will also create a new entrance to the station on Hill Street. http://www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2010/12/20/it-s-christmas-day-working-at-new-street-station-97319-27857272/

New Street will reopen alongside the rest of the rail network on the 27th December but there will be rail replacement buses between Redditch and New Street on the 27th and 28th as work continues on the Selly Oak bypass, http://rail-news.com/2010/12/13/no-christmas-break-for-gateway-project-as-key-bridge-installed/

Work on the demolition of the lower level of the car park ready for the extension of the concourse has been completed.

Work also is taking place on structural works to the old NCP car park entrance on Stephenson Street behind hoardings.
