Replacing Chamberlain Hall

It's almost a year to the day since I noted the redevelopment plans for Chamberlain Hall at the University of Birmingham, 'High' Hall - University of Birmingham Chamberlain Hall replacement, with a replacement hall of residence for the six year closed former student accommodation.

Planning permission was granted in January 2013 despite objections from local residents and Calthorpe Residents' Society and Edgbaston Residents' Association.  In September 2013 it was announced Balfour Beatty had secured the contract to build the 21 storey replacement,, and work to demolish the former hall has progressed rapidly.  If you pass the former hall of residence today you'll see the former Ridge Hall, or Hampton Wing, has been demolished with only the Chelwood Wing extension and original High Hall, Eden Tower, remaining.  The tower will soon face it's demise with a temporary replacement telecommunications mast replacing the mast on top of the tower allowing for it to be demolished.

Like Doctor Who which is celebrating it's 50th Anniversary the hall as it stands has recently celebrated it's 50th anniversary of topping out on 3rd October 1963, and like the time lord it will regenerate into a new improved hall of residence crowning the Vale on it's summit.

The following pictures show the hall and works to prepare it for the demolition.  Seeing the view across to Eden Tower, High Hall, across the site of what was once Hampton Wing, Ridge Hall being a former resident is sad seeing it all gone but I look forward to seeing it's new replacement and the opportunity to pass by on the bus and look across to the beautiful Vale.
