Chamberlain Fallen

Since my last update on the demolition of Chamberlain Hall, Chamberlain continues to fall, the structure is now a stump with the majority of the tower demolished and work set to rapidly move forward as foundations are set for the new blocks.

Balfour Beatty who were awarded the £42m contract will build mechanical and electrical units housing ducting, cabling and pipework offsite at it's Wednesbury Modular Systems+ facility to reduce construction time on site, http://www.cnplus.co.uk/news/contracts/balfour-beatty-wins-42m-birmingham-student-halls-job/8655902.article#.UwfbZnd_vE4

Construction on the new hall of residence is expected to be completed in Winter 2015.

The following pictures are from 21 February 2014 showing the remains of the tower.

Across many parts of Birmingham’s suburbs, tall tower-blocks are being demolished and replaced with stylish low-rise structures. So I do find it very bizarre that in Sutton Coldfield on the derelict Brassington Avenue site, developers are seeking planning permission to build 5 retirement tower blocks, the tallest 16 storey. I am totally behind this kind of regeneration scheme in Birmingham city centre, but I thought we had seen the end of this kind of scheme in the suburbs.
