Squaring a circus

Yesterday saw the launch of Colmore Square, the small square between Colmore Row and Steelhouse Lane, with the completion of Birmingham's first area enhancement civil engineering project undertaken solely by a Business Improvement District,  http://colmorebusinessdistrict.com/colmore-square-enhancement/

The square has seen improved landscaping together with new lighting and benches and features a chess garden 'pocket park; featuring two stone tables with inset chessboards.  It follows the Church Street Square development, Church Street Squares Up, and adds an improved streetscape for people to pass through and use.  With the Midland Metro running nearby and the Wesleyan Building and Two Colmore Square adjacent it should provide a welcome stop for both visitors, local workers and residents to enjoy.

A launch event will be held on 8 May in Shoosmiths' offices for the new square.

Pictures of the newly completed square are shown below taken on 14 April.

A few plants, but the planters were placed on top of tiered stepping that at lunch time people sat on to eat outside. So, ironically, what was a useful and frequented space has become a less useful, transient, space with people merely passing through.
