Bridging the (rail) line

Work continues on the redevelopment of New Street station with progress now taking place on Hill Street where an extension of the Navigation Street bridge will see an entrance located on Hill Street.

The pictures below show the demolition of part of the wall on Hill Street with work to extend the Navigation Street bridge expected to happen during a Christmas blockade this year. The bridge which currently only provides access to 10 of the 12 platforms will have a section removed to allow for it to be extended to serve the unconnected platforms, New Street project 'blown away' by design.

Meanwhile work is still progressing on the demolition of the lower level of the car park ready for the extension of the concourse.

Since construction, or rather demolition, started earlier this year on the first phase of the project, the car park has been transformed by the removal of floor slabs and beams, leaving a large hall. This hall sits with the platform area immediately below it and the Pallasades shopping area immediately above it, and will become part of the new Concourse for the station which will open in Autumn 2012 on completion of Phase 1. http://www.wmcce.org/node/864

Colemans who have been on site demolishing the car park level since April 2010 are expected to finish their works by Christmas.

Also while work continues prepatory work for the demolition of Stephenson Tower continues with project cabins installed adjacent to the tower.
