Birmingham Hotel developments update January 2013 A

In my look ahead to 2013, Busting a Boom? A look towards 2013 in Birmingham, I noted the spate of new builds and redevelopments creating new hotels in Birmingham.  A report from thebusinessdesk.com report in November 2012 that occupancy rose to 61% in August 2012, up from 59% in August 2011, http://www.thebusinessdesk.com/westmidlands/news/402573-birmingham-hotel-market-far-from-fawlty-in-a-tough-market.html.  The report also noted a trend in London for boutique hotels and branded budget hotels and the developments in Birmingham seem to tie in with these changes.

A growing trend in London to open either high-end, boutique or branded budget hotels offering lower rates to gain market position has led hoteliers across the UK to recognise they need to differentiate their offering, he added.
“At present, the outlook for the hotel sector in cities like Birmingham in 2013 is broadly flat, with most hoteliers maintaining their current outlook. Hotels in the city therefore need to clearly identify their offering and avoid the middle ground in order to capitalise on opportunities for occupancy growth and higher revenue.”http://www.thebusinessdesk.com/westmidlands/news/402573-birmingham-hotel-market-far-from-fawlty-in-a-tough-market.html#

The following is an update on some of the current new hotel developments which are redeveloping former office blocks.

Jury's Inn Hotel on Broad Street has undergone a sixteen month £4.7m makeover for the 445 bed hotel, http://www.incentivetravel.co.uk/new...-4-7m-makeover.  The makeover has seen the bedrooms, meeting rooms and public areas refurbished.

The refurbishment of Kennedy Tower in the Snow Hill area of the city into a new 224 bedroom Holiday Inn Express continues to take place with the most noticeable change, new windows aside, being the repaint from orange to grey.  At ground level the former entrances and lobbies of the former block are being cleared to make way for new ground level lobbies.  The pictures below, taken on 13 January 2013 show the works taking place on the redevelopment.

One Martineau Place, the former office block above Martineau Place, is being transformed in a £35m redevelopment to a 168 bedroom Staybridge Suites Hotel.  The 115,000 sq ft office building built in the 1960s is being converted by The Cannock Group, who successfully renovated Cumberland House on Broad Street into a 285 bedroom Hampton by Hilton Hotel.  Window replacement is currently taking place and is due to be completed by March 2013.

The following pictures show the refurbishment on 13 January 2013.
