The Welsh Connection

Network Rail has recently published it's Route Utilisation Strategy for Wales, it's strategy for dealing with capacity, passenger and freight demand, performance, cost and the requirements of stakeholders and funders.

The RUS for Wales, although not explicity covering Birmingham and the Midlands rail network, emphasises the importance the redevelopment of Birmingham New Street and rail services in the region will have on passengers and freight travelling to Wales. The Midlands and Chiltern RUS will be published in draft in 2009.

The RUS shows Birmingham has the largest number of interchanges in sheer numbers to and from Wales RUS area despite only 15% of the Birmingham New Street station interchanges being to/from the Wales RUS area.
