Next stop ... visual live train times
Matthew Somerville, a retired civil servant, has created a great live train map showing trains on approaches to stations. The map uses data from the National Rail website, http://www.nationalrail.co.uk, and is strangely addictive allowing users to follow trains travelling from and to many of the main stations in Britain.
The yellow pins are stations (click for a local map of that station), the red pins trains.

The site provides a great opportunity for new multi-function mobile phones such as the Apple I-phone to not only access live departure times from Network Rail,http://www.nationalrail.co.uk, but to see these on a map visually.
The screenshots below show the site and how you can monitor trains travelling between stations and view the location of stations. The screenshots show trains around the Greater Birmingham area and also the Greater Manchester area together with National Rail website's Live Departure online boards.
