Fertile West Midlands

The Birmingham Post reported on the 10th July that West Midlands has highest fertility rate in the UK.

Each woman in the West Midlands gave birth to 2.04 children on average in 2007, according to fertility rate figures for England and Wales released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The national average was 1.91 children per woman - the highest figure since 1973, when each woman gave birth to two children on average

Amongst individual local authorities in England, Newham in East London had the highest rate with 2.71 children per woman while Westminster had lowest with 1.24.
