Birmingham Lord Mayor to help fight extremism
British newspapers have reported on the government backed campaign aimed at preventing people in Pakistan from engaging in extremist activity which features Birmingham Lord Mayor Chaudry Abdul Rashid; Please don't hate us: UK ad campaign to target extremism.
The three month campaign called I am the West will consist of 30 second TV commercials and events in regions such as Peshawar and Mirpur.
Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Chaudry Abdul Rashid is from Mirpur, one of the regions being targeted. Over 70% of Britain's Pakistani population are Mirpuris and the Lord Mayor should offer a valuable role model for young Pakistani Muslims and in a small way an advertisement for Birmingham as a diverse city home to many Muslims.
The central theme of I Am the West is to assert that there is no contradiction in being a Muslim and being British. The synopsis says: "Muslims are equally proud of being both and certainly espouse the belief that violent extremism is not propagated in their name.
