Birmingham Pioneering Cancer Research
Cancer Research UK has announced that Cancer Research UK launches first super cancer centre in Birmingham with news that Birmingham will be home to the first of a unique chain of Cancer Research UK centres to be launched around the UK aiming to draw together world class research with areas of medical expertise for the benefit of cancer patients nationwise.
The link up with the University of Birmingham builds on funding Cancer Research UK already provides the university; Cancer Research UK is set to increase its contribution to around £9m a year to help develop the centre. The tie-up also furthers the reputation of the University of Birmingham's School of Cancer Sciences which was named in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise as the leading Cancer Studies centre outside of London, only trumped by the Institute of Cancer Research, http://www.newscentre.bham.ac.uk/press/2008/12/rae2008.shtml
As the first Cancer Research UK Centre, Birmingham will set the pace for national and international progress for genetics, gene therapy and the link between viruses and some cancers as well as focussing on cancers of the prostate and bladder and leukaemia. It will also become a leading centre for clinical trials.
