Golden Touch to Cube
The Cube's mailing list, updating on the development of the £75 million mixed use development, reports that the first bit of cladding for the building has arrived and that from mid February the 'glistening golden exterior' will start to add life to the building.
The Cube, a 23 storey mathematically pure cube design, 53.1 m x 53.1 m x 53.1 m, is due for completion in 2010. Demolition work began on the site in Summer 2006 with the buildings on site demolished and work has continued since then from excavating the deep foundations to the now rising core.

The enclosed site, surrounded by a canal and residential and commercial developments has seen innovative ways to create the design with the use of un-bonded post-tensioned concrete throughout allowing thinner slabs and increase floor to ceiling heights. The cladding panels will be fitted as the building rises but due to the tight confines of the site these will be hung from the inside using a male/female jointing to link the panels when the hanging starts.
The cladding, gold anodized aluminium cladding panels, is supplied by German firm Haga with each panel measuring 1.5m x 3.5m with the total number of cladding panels to cover the Cube equating to 18,000 m2, or almost five football pitches. 65 shipments of cladding will be delivered from Stuttgart to the Cube site over the next 12 months taking approximately 5,300 man hours to install over the coming year.
