Queen Elizabeth Hospital Plaza and Transport Interchange
Moves to create a Public Transport Interchange and Hospital Plaza on Vincent Drive by the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital have moved forward with a report of the Assistant Director (Development Strategy) of the 8th July to the Cabinet Member for Transport, Environment & Regeneration recommending approval for detailed design of the Public Transport Interchange scheme, an image of the layout of the interchange site is shown below, and for the approval of the Hospital Trust to construct and maintain the parts of the Hospital Plaza on public highway.
The Public Transport Interchange is to be delivered by the City Council using Section 106 funding from the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The Hospital Plaza is to be delivered and funded by the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
The cost of the new interchange is £562,000. Most of this money is mainly funded from Section 106 contributions from the hospital trust. The University of Birmingham are making a contribution of £63,000 for enhanced finishes on the approach roads to the University campus.
The Hospital Trust intends to commence construction of the Plaza in January 2012. The interchange and plaza will act as a main gateway to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital and provide an interchange between different transport modes of walking, cycling, buses and trains.
The site sits over the remains of Metchley Roman Fort, as shown below, and it will be interesting to see how the plaza emphasises the history while linking to the modern and the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Meanwhile nearby, the former Golden Cross public house which was demolished has been replaced by new student accommodation.
Also nearby the new Selly Oak New Road is nearing completion as these photos from the 9th July show.
With the road nearing completion Estates Gazette have reported that Land Securities has team up with Sainsbury's to develop the 30-acre Battery Park site. A planning application is expected this summer for the site opposite the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Sainsbury's already had consent for a mixed-use scheme at Battery Park in 2007 of 820 new homes, a 61,300 sq ft technology park, 79,000 sq ft supermarket, 132,400 sq ft of shops, 62,100 sq ft of offices, and a dental hospital. With the plans for the new Dental Hospital at the Pebble Mill site, Putting the bite into Edgbaston, together with the opportunity of developing the site of Selly Oak hospital the joint venture of Sainsbury's and Land Securities plan to replace the proposed residential and technology park with a 430,500 sq ft retail park, anchored by a 150,000 sq ft supermarket together with a second department store anchor.
An indicative plan of the new Sainsbury's.
