1,500 place prisons to replace Titan prison

The Times has reported that Recession forces Jack Straw to scrap 'Titan' prisons plan with the news that Jack Straw has abandoned plans to build three giant 'Titan' prisons, one of which was to have been built in the West Midlands, each holding 2,500 inmates to expand prison places to 96,000 by 2014.

Instead five 1,500 place prisons providing the same total number of places will be built with two given the go-ahead immediately.

The need for prison places is particulary acute in Birmingham. Twenty of the 135 prisons in England and Wales hold more than a 1,000. Birmingham is the second largest with 1,400 inmates following Wandsworth with 1,643 inmates.
