Birmingham Archbishop to lead England Catholic flock

The Times has reported that Most Rev Vincent Nichols to be named as head of British Catholics following Pope Benedict XVI's personal decision on the candidate to replace Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor.

He was chosen personally by Pope Benedict XVI to replace Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor after the pope returned from his recent trip to Africa.

He is thought to have won the Pope’s respect with his support for the cause for the canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman, of whose work Benedict XVI has made a lifelong study. Newman was lived and founded the Oratory in Birmingham and was buried there.

Damian Thompson of The Telegraph in his blog suggests that Nichols is a good choice as "He has enormously raised the profile of Catholicism in Birmingham and will now do the same for England and Wales", http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/damian_thompson/blog/2009/04/02/vincent_nichols_is_new_archbishop_of_westminster_says_report.
